Our next Creator AMA will take place on Tuesday Jan 14th at 3pm PT in the Creator Hub Discord > General > Creator AMA voice channel. You’ll find an announcement in the creator-announcements channel where you can RSVP.
No guest team this month. The focus will be on creator community thoughts as Rec Room heads into 2025. What issues are top of mind? What are your hopes for Rec Room in 2025? What features or other things are you missing that would help with your 2025 projects? We want to hear anything related to this theme! Normal bugs / questions like we do every creator AMA are fine too
How to submit your questions:
One question per comment! No comments with multiple questions.
Upvote / like questions you want to see answered. If someone has the same question as you please just upvote theirs instead of double posting.
Questions must be creation related! If your question is a general RR question like ‘when yall updating dodgeball?’ that’s not for this AMA
The most upvoted / liked questions will be featured during the live AMA.
All questions answered during the Dec Creator AMA are documented in the description of the video recording here.
Reminder that we published two blog posts at the end of Dec on these topics which we know have been a concern for creators lately:
If you have a question on one of these topics please be sure to read the blog post first!
We will be recording the AMA in case you can’t make it to hear your question answered. We’ll post the video here and in the Creator Hub discord announcements channel once its been edited.
Rules for anyone we bring up on stage during the AMA:
One question per visit to the stage. A very fast and RELATED follow up question is ok but you should have one primary question
Ask your question in around 30 seconds or less. No long 3+ min questions. If RR staff want more context we will prompt you to hear a story or longer explanation but keep your initial question quick!
I made a forum post about this but would like to bring it up here aswell
Is the instances page in the settings of a room going to be updated any time soon?
Ever since it was made, Rec Room has grown much more in many ways and there’s tools that we really need to be able to manage our rooms properly
I got a whole list of features listed in the post
The ability to shut down instances
The ability to make instances private without being there
The ability to view private instances but not who are in them. And maybe there could be a “request invite” button
The ability to refresh an instance
The ability to refresh ALL instances for when the creator makes a new urgent update
The ability to send global announcements to all servers
Player invisibility was sadly lost in Rooms 2.0 due to the removal of the role system. When can we expect to see it added back through a chip?
In a previous AMA there was mention of potentially reevaluating the moderation concerns surrounding full invisibility. Is there a way to start that conversation with the safety and moderation team?
If full invisibility is still off the table, perhaps a compromise such as a reduced visibility distance between players when invisible would be effective.
I’m working on a prop hunt game in Rooms 2.0, and the lack of invisibility in R2 makes it challenging to create an enjoyable experience. Adding full invisibility would massively improve gameplay, but even partial invisibility would be a significant improvement over the current state.
Will we get any big changes to room moderation this year? The current tools room creators have to moderate their rooms are HIGHLY limited, and some features don’t even work! (cough cough, disabled votekicks) Being able to have better customization of room moderation, such as strikes, temp bans, actually functional settings, and more would be INSANELY useful, and with chip integration could really work well.
(side note, please allow setting inventory item images via studio, same goes with room offer images, kind of a cheat with run the block )
Inventions are in desperate need of a new permission level between “edit and save” and “use only”, called just “can edit” that allows for editing the invention, but still not saving it. It would be available on premium inventions so users can finally tweak and modify paid inventions if the creator wants them to be able to. Without it, it’s really hard to want to sell circuits inventions because if an update breaks them players can’t edit into any circuitboards to try and fix it. It also makes things like dorm skins far less desirable because if there’s one or two things you don’t like about it, you cannot change it. Will Rec Room do this anytime soon?
Inventions need to be able to have multiple listed creators. Unless it’s leftover stuff from a different menu that they copy-pasted when first making the inventions menu in the 2D UI, it looks like this is already partially implemented. Many creations simply are only possible as a team, but it feels unfair for only one player to get to upload the invention and sell it. We really need to be able to add co-owners to inventions. Perhaps with customisable earnings sharing.
Can we please get this sometime soon? It is sorely needed for some people like me, who are great with one area of creation (circuits) but terrible at others (making environments and structures, and oftentimes props)
Could we see the introduction of a Stage Light V2 in the future? Many builders would agree that stage lights are very useful for creating mood and atmosphere in their rooms. A new version with better reliability and more customization options compared to CV1 would be a great addition.
Changes to how the algorithm promotes rooms is much needed, and the blog post is a nice read.
While you’re working towards getting higher quality rooms front & center, are you planning to do anything about the existing low quality rooms? As long as these rooms continue to take up the front page, creators will continue to feel less incentive to create high quality experiences.
In Run The Block, the inventory items in the room use transparent images, which typically isn’t possible. Will we be getting a feature that allows us to set the image of an inventory item via studio?
Inventions are so janky to unpublish, edit, and re-publish. At the moment if you unpublish an invention—to make a minor circuits fix for example—it can take days or even weeks for Rec Room to realise that it’s not still published, it keeps saying “You already have a published invention with this name”. I had an old sword invention i took down to tweak and reupload and i’m pretty sure i ended up needing Zendesk’s help to delete this fake/broken instance of it on the store despite having already unpublished it, before i could reupload.
When will Rec Room give some more love to inventions and their shortcomings like these?
Will we continue to see more communication about Rec Room’s issues in a more “timely” manner? It took a while for you guys to finally make a statement about lower-quality spam rooms after the problem reached a critical point (and it still is terrible; I cannot go to the new or hot tab and find good-quality rooms). I love the transparency, but we need more consistent transparency on the issues much quicker.
From what I have heard, the rooms 2.0 closed beta has been going smoothly, is there any ETA for when the changes on the beta branch will come over to the main branch?
The main issue imo is that rec room crashes my entire phone whenever i built too fast on android phone.
I have this bug since august 2024 and because of it i couldnt finish my dorm room or a room im working on. Sure i can go and be slow but sometimes i forget it and just speed up.
Speaking of a room, here is my question: will there be a separate bow that has double shot patched?
Mostly because of PVP rooms VR Players have advantage of bows because of double shot but screen players are stuck with it.
And im making a room thats capture the flag with only bows.
So it would be nice (and also fair) to have a bow that both VR and Screen has same advantage and not VR Players being able to become burst guns but bows.
Would there be any kind of CV2 for Rooms 1.0/Rooms 2.0 in which instances would be able to send events/information to other instances? (Broadcast rooms can already protentially do this, but what about non-broadcast rooms?, there could be ways players could buy a consumable to activate global events across all instances!)
Currently, the recnet image type cannot be used without Rec Room Studio. I think it was a severely missed opportunity not to include an in-game component that can be used by all players even without Rec Room Studio. So, with that being said, will we ever see a “rec.net” image component available in the maker pen?
