We have big dreams for the future of expression in Rec Room, whether you’re rocking a bean or full body avatar. That’s why we’re giving the bean avatar a well-deserved upgrade to match our commitment to both avatar styles!
This isn’t just about new features—though there are plenty. It’s about ensuring that both avatar forms can enjoy new features, be compatible with Avatar Studio, and improve performance across all devices, which means lower crash rates for everyone.
The upgraded bean is still in an experimental stage so we’ll be rolling it out in phases and collecting feedback to make changes on. As we go through this phase, you’ll still have the option to stick with the classic bean for a bit longer, so you can choose to explore these new changes at your own pace, and give us feedback on it here. Check out the full details and our roll-out plan by reading more here.
Finally… after all this time… our bean hands will now actually hold weapons…
This… does put a smile on my face…
(ALSO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD REVERT THE ANIMATION GIZMO UI TO HOW IT WAS PLEASE)
The typical classic bean avatar took up about 1.5~2 MB when in LOD0, the upgraded bean avatar takes around 0.8~1.3 MB. So we’ve reduced the memory footprint by about 50%!
I gotta say, the “upgraded” bean avatar feels like a BIG downgrade. It takes the VR out of VR players, adding animations to some of the things they do (like sliding) which isn’t good for pretty much any games on RR (it alters the player’s collision box making PvP games really bad). Not to mention the player grab interaction (like grabbing a player in MurderV3 to kill them for instance) is COMPLETLY out-of-wack! it’s very difficult to grab/interact with a new bean body player. (not to mention they look like the Hunch Back of Notre-dame)
Hmm, I’ve got to say I do actually like the new bean bodies. But I do agree the collisions and hand collision is terrible. With the introduction of full body, it’s the first time that RecRoom moves your hands away from where they actually are in-game. It sucks, and takes away from the immersion in my opinion. Perhaps set this as an option like “Prevent Hand-Object Clipping”. Also, yeah it would be nice if the hunch wasn’t so bad.
