We love knowing that you can create and play with your friends on pretty much any device you have, but we also know that there are some differences between our platforms. We want players using their phones or consoles like Xbox and PlayStation to feel like they are in the Room, just like if you’re in VR. That’s why we’ve released a new feature called “Place”.
So what is Place? Place does what it says: allows you to more accurately place and manipulate some objects in Rec Room. It currently applies to Maker Pen objects that are grabbable, but don’t have collision or physics. For example, moving objects around on a board game like checkers just got a whole lot easier! Now, when you play on your phone or console or PC, you’ll have much better control over your hands in Rec Room. Check out these checkerboard moves!!
Why are we doing this? Well, we had a theory that making non-VR devices more interactive would benefit everyone in the Rec Room community. And turns out it’s true. It’s more fun to hang out with other players who can also move things around more precisely and interact with the world you’re in. And we are seeing that especially in community-created Rooms, which means more players are spending time enjoying the awesome work of our creators! Because of this, we are going to continue to iterate on how we can make Rec Room an even more fun and interactive Place (haha, get it?) no matter what device you’re using.
Our second version of this feature is coming Soon™. When that releases, it will mean that you can move and interact with even more objects - and it’ll be easier to start and stop using Place. This way, you’ll all be able to play more games and even use old objects in new ways. Donut stacking competition, anyone?!
We hope you all find this useful and we’re excited to hear what you think! Let us know your feedback.
