Improved Creator Moderation Tools

New and Improved Creator Moderation Tools

Keeping Rec Room safe and fun for players is a top priority for us. We believe that creators and room moderators have an important role to play in this mission by keeping your rooms well-moderated. We know lots of you have put a lot of effort into making that happen, often working around the limited tools. So, we heard you and to make it easier, we’re releasing new moderation features for our creators and room moderators.

Temporary Room Bans

You can now temporarily ban players from rooms you own or moderate. You know best when you’re seeing disruptive behavior in your room so you can choose to issue bans for a few minutes, hours, or days. And don’t worry - you can still permanently ban any players who aren’t abiding by the rules of your room.

Room Ban Reasons

When banning a player from your room, you can choose to enter a ban reason, which will be displayed to the player. If no reason is entered, the player will receive the generic room ban message.

Room Ban Details

And…one more thing. You can see the status and reason for a player’s current active ban along with any past room bans. To access this go to This Room > Settings > Moderation > View Banned Players > Ban Details.

Room bans have three statuses:

  • Active – currently applied bans.
  • Elapsed – bans that have since ended.
  • Lifted – bans removed by an owner or moderator before the ban ended.

Players trying to visit a room they are banned from will see a message stating they cannot join the room along with the ban duration. Clicking “Details” will display the reason for the ban.

When we asked you what you needed to moderate the spaces, these were the top asks.

Consider this v1 of these new improved tools. We have more in the works for later this year - improved UX for the banned players page (searchability, sorting options), moderation audit logs, and improvements to room kicks.

FAQ:

Q: Who has access to these new tools?

A: Room creators, co-owners, contributors, and moderators have access to these tools. To ban a player from a specific room, you must be in that room to ban them.

Q: Can I view a player’s ban history if they are not currently banned from my room?

A: Not at this time, but we do have designs ready to allow this. To view a player’s room ban history, they must currently be banned from the room.

Q: Can I see which moderators removed a ban?

A: Not in this first iteration, but we know creators want this!

Q: If I also choose to ban a player from other rooms I own or co-own, can I see the ban reason in those rooms?

A: Yes! If you ban a player from a room you own or moderate and choose to extend the ban to other rooms you own or moderate, you can view their ban reason while in those rooms too

Oh these are such a great QOL addition, I can’t wait to see what else is in store if any, but have an actual log like this is amazing!

Just a curious question, would we ever be allowed to have a chip that is read only on the ban logs? :eyes:

Finally. Thank you!

That’s a great idea, bans should definitely carry over to associated accounts. There has been soooo many times that I’ve banned someone and they just keep rejoining

Fantastic!!
