Desperately needed Moderation Tools

-When we had the 3d Ui for banning users, it also gave us the option to unban them from multiple rooms which is a tedious process in general, (we lost this functionality during the 2D UI translation)
-0 name search in banned players, this causes so much extra time, including when you also are going through multiple scrolls and clicks just to get to the “View banned players” list

Solutions:

  1. When pulling up a user’s profile under the moderation section you can get a “View all rooms you Own/Co-own/Moderate” button that brings up a list of room with radio buttons so you can quickly click their name and remove their bans from their rooms)
  2. Allow what we have above BUT through Rec.net since currently iirc there’s no way to use rec.net to unban or ban users, which really makes it 10x slower having to boot up Rec Room just to do moderation

-Players can change their @ names, since we can’t view a user’s previous @ name OR leave notes on why users are banned someone can change they’re @ name, and we will have 0 knowledge on how or why they were banned in the first place, leading to hours of confusion and frustration

Solutions:

  1. Allow users to view a users previous @ name so we can ensure they haven’t been banned previously under a different name along with adding notes into a users on why we are room banning them, to report someone you need to leave notes on why you are reporting them, why can’t this feature be ported to room moderation? Instead of having room owners rely on 3rd party software to do something that should be done in-game

Good Suggestion from the comments:
-Add Ban Durations, this way we can give users a chance to atone for their actions and get a second chance, most users never unban since its more of a hassle to deal with

Additionally I think we get the ability to set a ban time
Like if I want to only ban someone for 3 days I can
But if I want to ban him for like 2 years I can too

This big time!

There’s a lot of tools that Rec Room staff have access to judging by the fact that you can submit tickets concerning unbanning users from your rooms en masse or being able to ask which moderator went on a banning spree because you are receiving a lot of complaints about being falsely room banned, and much much more.

I think they’re stretched thin right now with work around Nintendo Switch prep right now, but I do hope they make better and more user owned room moderation a bigger priority sometime early 2025.

In the long run, it should decrease the amount of time they’d be manually helping out users in an individual basis when the users can just go get the info they need in-game or on rec.net, depending where they choose to implement these tools.

Short list of possibly good additions:

  • Being able to see which room owner/moderator banned who
  • Being able to leave a note on why a user got banned
  • Being able to temporarily ban users from a preset amount of times (not just jump to a perma room ban)
  • per user room moderation history (only for the room)
  • being able to bulk select users to remove/alter their room ban (maybe lock this one to the room owner/co-owners)

These are all great! Perhaps a stretch, but having API requests alongside this would be really useful for moderation logging.

It would be really nice if you could pull up a players room moderation history through a discord bot, it could even show their moderation history across multiple rooms! (if you own them or have access to their API requests)

I can imagine a scenario where a player has been banned from a room for an extended period of time and they would like to be unbanned. They could make a request in the rooms discord server(or some other location like a website) and a moderator could pull up their moderation history remotely without having to go into game and pull up their profile.

However If they make these tools for moderation really useful, it may eliminate the need for logging and tracking moderations through discord bots.

Being able to give specific details on why a user was moderated & being able to set timers for the lengths of their ban are definitely by slice of cake here.

As a moderator myself, I would find these suggestions extremely helpful in the procession & evolution of Rec Room “Room” Moderation. It’d make my job and others jobs significantly easier.

an update: we are working on the creator facing moderation tools in early 2025 and Chase spoke about this work in the Nov Creator AMA here https://youtu.be/yQUJZjP8YV8?si=Jpsef0o3AssmDqEJ&t=1783

More updates as we have them but I’m deff excited to see us improving this system
