As Rec Room evolves and releases new moderation features such as AIRS, Profile Picture Automation etc., I think a ‘reputation’ system would be beneficial in the next stage of moderation.
Here’s how I envision this working:
Within the watch menu, players should be able to see their reputation within Rec Room. This shows either ‘Excellent, Good, Poor, Very Poor’; this is only available to the player to see their account standing.
If they receive voice moderation or staff moderation, this should count towards their ‘reputation’. This allows players to see how their Rec Room standing is, and change their behavior accordingly.
The system should operate on a points basis: e.g. automated voice moderation would deduce 10 points from a player default of 100. This then places the player into one of the above categories.
Many services offer a similar system: Discord, Xbox etc.
After 3-6 months, the points should revert back to 100 (or whatever points number Rec Room decides to utilize). If successfully appealed moderation actions, staff should have the ability to remove points from the players record.
I strongly feel this would be beneficial to the future of Rec Room, and aid in player moderation. This instantly allows players to see how their account is seen, and what they need to do to improve.
From what I understand of RR moderation systems, there’s already something similar implemented in the game.
If you’ve never been voice banned, the system won’t act on you making a mistake once in a while. However once you get voice banned, it becomes more severe the next time.
Same goes for time outs. First one is 10 minutes. Next one is longer, etc.
So all that is missing would be showing the data to the player.
This already exists in almost exactly this form. The problem is Rec Room never makes official statements that it exists, they just casually mention it here and there sometimes. This is why we have so many “wah i did barely anything wrong and got banned super easily!!”, that is because the game keeps track of how often you are reported for inappropriate behaviour. If you are more inappropriate, you are less trusted by the system. Your reports and your resistance to others’ attempted reports become weaker.
I would assume, as you’ve pointed out that there is some kind of system already implemented on Rec Room’s side.
I think it would be beneficial if the player can see this within their user settings within the watch menu, and in Rec.net. If Rec Room is aiming for transparency of it’s moderation systems and techniques, I think it is worth this being made available to the player base.
Although Rec Room moderation system does notify (from what I’ve been told, as I have never had moderation actions against me), having this presented in a permeant format, even when no moderation actions have been taken will be a useful I feel.
Being able to see just your own trust level would maybe shut up some of the more obvious “i did nothing and was false banned” kids who earlier had been shouting slurs and whatnot? If anyone asked to see their trust level they would be waayyy more easily shut down.
Precisely my thoughts.
For future development, I think this would be beneficial to players and maybe reduce the amount of Zendesk tickets by directing people to their reputation.
Yes, I’m so tired of hearing “I got voice banned for NO REASON”
I’ve been playing for like 5 years, and in that time I’ve been voice banned a total of 3 times. I may not agree with the reasons, but I still know exactly why I was voice banned each time.
Rec Room doesn’t like being transparent about any of their systems, any questions and concerns get shut down or outright ignored, and unless you’re lucky enough to get your question on the AMA (and make sure to clear your schedule for that day to hear the answers), you’re not going to get any meaningful feedback on any issue.
That being said, this would be an extremely wonderful feature, especially as someone who creates maps and runs events, I’d be able to take a look at someone’s profile and at a glance have at least an idea how they are going to behave in the room.
Sometimes i think it is better if rec room doesnt share all information about their systems, as it makes it easier for people to find ways around them.
I think if Rec Room wishes to progress they need to be forthcoming on how they work.
Rec Room stipulates everyone follows the CoC and CCoC, and I see this as an evolution of the moderation system.
I can approach this is another direction. I am not against Rec Room relaxing their moderation, and allow the community to have discourse freely without automated services. I recognize initially it will have a more toxic player base, but it will calm down after the initial phase. Honestly, I have found Rec Room to always have a portion of the player base which is toxic.
The trick here is finding balance, but if Rec Room decides to double down on the moderation, they must be crystal clear.
