Keeping Profile Photos Safe

We have recently heard players asking for more information about how we keep Rec Room fun and safe. Like security, we have to get the balance right on what we share and what we don’t so we don’t inadvertently furnish bad actors with information to get around our systems. But, when we can share, we will, so keep your eyes peeled for more blogs from the Trust & Safety team.

This week, we’re providing more detail on one of our lesser known and newer systems – profile photo moderation.

Changing your profile photo is a great way to make your profile reflect who you are in Rec Room. Once in a while, we see profile pictures that don’t align with Rec Room’s Code of Conduct or Creator Code of Conduct. So, we’ve got a system in place to help us find those quickly and take action.

We’ve talked before about how our community is awesome. A lot of people play Rec Room but only a tiny minority of people don’t play by the rules. And our community is fantastic at helping us keep Rec Room safe. That’s why we have created extensive reporting features across Rec Room so you can report content or behavior that doesn’t meet the Codes of Conduct.

So, when players report a profile photo to us, our image moderation system automatically scans the profile photos. The system is looking for content that goes against Rec Room’s standards, like discriminatory or sexual content.

We receive the scan results within seconds. If a profile photo is flagged as violating, it will be automatically deleted and removed from the player’s profile. Additionally, the reported player will be restricted from uploading a new profile photo for two weeks. This is a pretty new system so we are checking accuracy, severity and scale to determine whether additional moderation actions should be in place, such as banning players who have the most harmful photos.

We’ve removed hundreds and hundreds of harmful profile photos since the system went live in March. So far, we’ve found that the system is very accurate - over 99% correct during our testing!

How to Report an Inappropriate Profile Photo

If you come across an inappropriate profile photo while in-game, here’s how to report it:

  1. Navigate to the player’s profile
  2. Click “Report”
  3. Click “Report” again to access the report form
  4. Choose “Inappropriate Profile Photo” as the report option and submit the report

You can help us keep Rec Room safe by reporting in-game. Watch this space for more Trust & Safety team blogs.

Nice. I’m glad that these features are now available to keep the recroom appropriate and friendly.

Finally this is what we needed so much

Correction: only a tiny minority are punished for not playing by the rules. This is a step in the right direction, but downplaying the toxicity and lack of moderation as if they are essentially non-issues is very disheartening, especially as a player who witnesses and is very often the target of this “tiny minority”.

Sure these automated tools are great, but please don’t write this off as a minor problem.

What would be nice is if we could show or turn off visibility for the Rec Room Avatar in profile for certain people.

Great update. Is it possible in the future we can update our profile photos through recnet with an image upload sort of like the vrchat website? For example without Recroom+ you only get a certain amount of uploads for your website gallery and with Recroom+ you get an increased amount. I saw that you guys wanted incentives to own Recroom+ and I believe this would be another great opportunity. Changing your profile photo with photos outside of Recroom would give players a little more freedom with sharing their personality and character within Recroom which would be awesome and I think this new moderation would be able to keep it under control. But again thanks for this update it was well needed.
