With the Solarpunk contest kicking off we saw a new wave of R2 bug reports coming in. After looking over them here in the forums and and in Discord these are what I found to be the top 4 most reported issues:
[23 reports] Tubes and shapes are ‘shifting’ while building. Collisions can also be shifted and can cause players to soft lock.
[20 reports] R2 is ‘laggy’ as more Maker Pen shapes or high ink inventions are added to the room
[14 reports] Crashing to dorm room or desktop
[6 reports] Saving a room or cloning an animation controller causes the animation to break or creates a lot of lag
The team is looking for more videos, room names, and detailed reproduction steps to track down these issues. Videos are especially helpful since stuff like ‘shapes are moving’ can be difficult to understand without visuals. ^Roomnames are helpful because the team can go check out the room or clone your room into a test environment where they can try to reproduce the bug themselves. And detailed reproduction steps of exactly how to reproduce an issue help them ensure they are reproducing your actual bug and not something else.
I know some of you have sent me videos or room names already for these issues but please post them again here if you don’t mind so we can have them all in one place. Any new details you’ve discovered about the bugs would also be great. Here’s where we’re at with each of these currently:
Tubes and shapes are ‘shifting’ while building. Collisions can also be shifted and can cause players to soft lock.
We had a fix impacting tube editing go out a day after some of the tube related reports. For those who had experienced “ghost” points from editing tubes or them behaving unexpectedly, please try them out now and let us know if any new issues pop up.
For object shifting, it looks like this was caused by an experiment on our end. We turned it off, so you shouldn’t see this anymore. If you do, please send us the room name and video and we will investigate.
R2 is ‘laggy’ as more Maker Pen shapes or high ink inventions are added to the room
The team is looking for more info here on where players start to hit issues. Is there a rough number of Maker Pen shapes where you start to hit issues? (please list your platform since this will likely be different on low end vs high end devices)
We’ve noticed players are building in R1 and then bringing inventions into R2. This may work for smaller inventions, but entire room conversion from R1 → R2 isn’t currently supported. We recommend building entirely in your R2 room or using R2 inventions if you can. R1 to R2 inventions, especially inventions with a large number of shapes, may be causing issues for people (room lag, shapes shifting, etc)
Crashing to dorm room or desktop
We found a bug that went out in our last update that increased crash rate for Maker Pen users on all platforms, but especially VR platforms. We have a fix for this in already that will go out next update.
We are currently investigating the issue where some players are unable to load into the room. If you have a room that is consistently hitting this issue, please let us know the room name so we can take a look!
Log files are also super helpful here. If you crash to dorm you can send in your log file using Settings > Misc > Bug report and we can check the logs to see whats happening. Please mention this R2 bugs forum post in your report so its easier for us to find these specifically.
Despite it not being really mentioned here, I’m really surprised nothing about Player lag was mentioned, essentially the more players that exist within an instance, the more unstable the instance becomes, you’ll likely never noticed this of the room is primarily studio assets and objects, only ever if the room uses maker pen shapes, which I suppose does somewhat connect this issue to the maker pen shapes issues stated here
@Shawn Is there any updates/ notes from the contest team about what will be done about the contest until these bugs are fixed? most of these bugs are gamebreaking and making the creation of these rooms very frustrating, Limiting, and sometimes even making your room unusable.
The more players with a Maker Pen out creating? Or just anyone in a room? When does this start to impact you in an empty or low objects room and on what platform?
Hello shawn I sent you a DM on disc with more videos and information because it is a contest room. We don’t quite understand what the issue is but it’s pretty detrimental. We have a good amount of containers with low shape counts and the Room has a huge lag spike when we take out our maker pens or drop our maker pens. I don’t know how to reproduce this but if you clone our room then you can take a look for yourself. The room name is also in your Dms on Discord. Also it doesn’t matter who pulls out or drops or maker pen. It affects everybody, so everybody goes through a huge lag spike.
This issue mainly seems to occur when there’s just generally a bunch of players within the room, (I don’t have any cases where it’s been because of users actively creating in a given room as I tend to create alone) I’m mainly encountering this issue in my own room currently that is featured (RingSmackDown) which has had its player count dropped from 20 players, to 10, and now 8, and even then the performance drops severely to the point where the rooms initial startup sequence via circuits are failing to execute locally for the player from the lag spikes on a player loading into the room
The rooms object count is not small, but it is also no where near high, my own estimation of ink usage (if it had any) would put it on par with about 30-35% being used (assuming it was R1)
This probably won’t come as a surprise but the platform was PlayStation VR (ps4 version on the ps5)
I’ve sent you a couple video of some bugs we’re running into while creating our contest room in Discord dms. Please try and have a conversation with the contest team about what will be done due to things breaking in this way.
I’ve crashed plenty of times when the contest started but now I’m not even able to load into my room anymore. Getting an error message code 8700. I’m able to load into other rooms fine, but not my room. Internet connection is working and it’s happening on my other platforms too( my laptop and PS5)
@chrisx humm did you bring a R1 invention into this room? or load other inventions that may have had caused the issue? What had you done in the room so far?
Also for any other devs looking at this the room is ^synthesiscity
Thank you to everyone for these updated reports! I’ve fwd them on to the team who are taking a look at them. If you haven’t read my post above and still want to send in some updated videos of any R2 bugs you are hitting or a detailed report on your issue please do!
Would be reporting an issue regarding saving on Rooms 2.0. Wouldn’t have any suggestions for recreating but loading the room we had would just resort to going back to the dorm room with a load timeout. Would be willing to share an image of the roomname and the version number that was the problem incase a dev would like to see what room data was preventing a load?
Player.log would refer info about
Exception: [01:29:44] [191049] [967.8663] [Exception] [Unity | Error] Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

and then attempting to load that save would just be trapped at a black screen.
If the save numbers are incrementing across the entirety of RecRoom, save number would be #211592969
We’ve been having the same issues, except now it’s got so bad the the game just crashed everyone back to the dorm when you drop makerpens. It’s also generally the first person to pickup and the last to drop. If other people are holding the maker pen you can spawn it no issues.
It’s becoming such an issue we can’t save the room to keep developing for the contest
For the mods, where do I want to say the name of the room? So you can experience it for yourselfs?
What’s the room name? Did you bring a R1 invention into this room? or load other inventions that may have had caused the issue? What had you done in the room so far?
At the time before this seemingly corrupted save (#211592969), was simply with another team member both of us adjusting CV2 circuits and adding/renaming/removing Object Properties for a replicator object. Save was stuck on a black screen, assuming that both of us had to restart RecRoom, but then nobody was able to get back into the unpublished room at all.
The room does have prior made inventions inserted from Rooms 1 to the Rooms 2 room, because the bugs earlier with Rooms 2 was really bad, to just build a little bit in Rooms 1 until an update made it a little better, but that was done already three days ago.
The other team member was able to ask for a RecRoom to change the save version, but for anyone else, probably keep a record of what save number the room was for a bug report, and you can also use rec.net to change the room version to load yourself without having to wait and ask a RecRoom team to change the version.
Would still be having persistant issues with a random member of the team struggling to join with a message being kicked back to the dorm room for
Failed to load room due to data timeout. Please try again momentarily. Code 8716
Happens to one team member or randomly happens to me, everybody in the instance gotta hop out of the instance and back in.
The animation Gizmo objects disconnect themselves after saving the room. It isn’t letting me send a video but I can give as MUCH information as possible. In my rooms 2 room, I have been able to save animations for awhile. Until after this recent update in which, I would make an animation sequence, then would save the room, and EVERY animation gizmo controller would still have keyframes in it. Just every object would be disconnected. I really hope this helps you guys out. I kinda don’t know what to do in the meantime lolll
@Tydalwavee RecRoom suggests to upload to GDrive or an unlisted Youtube video to share video files, just because of how big video files can be for video files, easier to let users use other platforms and share links.
