In our “Future of YOU” blog we shared our vision for expression in Rec Room. Over the last month, we’ve released some big changes to increase your “core identity” in Rec Room; body sliders, face customization, and more Avatar Studio creators onboarded with thousands of new avatar items released.
One of the issues we’ve talked about before is that being “you” in Rec Room was tied way too closely to your clothes rather than your avatar. You shouldn’t feel like you lose yourself each time you change your outfit. Body and face customization have helped, but there’s more we can do.
We believe finding your core identity should be part of the free fun of Rec Room. Core identity is anything that’s a part of your face or body. Clothes, costumes, and other collectibles that are layered on top can then be earned or purchased.
So we’re announcing that as of TODAY, any facial or head hair that we have made over the last eight years is free by default for all players (excluding any exclusive partnership items). This applies to Rec Room-made hair - hair made by the community via Avatar Studio is priced at the creator’s discretion, with a minimum price of 350 tokens.
We’re going to continue working on more features to make you and your outfits more unique, and hope you enjoy all your new hairstyles. What are you waiting for? Get styling!
FAQ:
Q: Can Avatar Studio creators charge for hair?
A: Our Avatar Studio creators must charge for the creations they make, but all the hair we’ve already made and any hair we make in the future will be free for all players. The minimum price AS creators must charge for hair is 350 tokens (the lowest minimum we allow for Avatar Studio creations). It’s up to the creators if they want to charge more.
Q: Could I get a refund if I purchased an item that is now free?
A: At the time you made the purchase, hair was a paid-for item so we aren’t able to provide refunds for historic purchases. We hope you love experimenting with all of the new hair options we’re making available now.
Q: What about hair earned through rewards or RROs?
A: RRO hair and facial hair earned through RRO rewards is remaining unlockable through the same methods and will not be free as part of this update.
Ok but how is this going to work with people who already bought all the hairs? Will we be getting anything from this change maybe a new free hair for only people who owned every hair? (Golden hair trust )
Shush about refunds, i’m more curious about the earned hairs too like the wizard beard, lumberjack beard, feathered hair, i think there was an earnable crazy spiky hair?
Everyones talking about no refunds, but guys, many have called rec room greedy, but this is a step in the right direction if thats true! They are legit making existing items FREE which i wouldve never predicted. W Update IMO.
Personality i own most the hairs and had to pay if you give them out for free i would like my tokens back because that’s not fair to the players that spent tokens to get them

Thanks, this will definitely make us like you more
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for free cosmetics and ways to express yourself, but not adding a system in place to allow refunds for items that were paid for in the past is not only scummy, but literally what Roblox was sued for
*Edit correction. Roblox was sued for DELETING items that were paid for via robux and not giving refunds. This is not the same, but is a similar situation, not giving refunds for items that were once paid for but are now free
Valid, In my games if I ever decide to make a purchasable free/ cheaper I have a system set up that gives players room currency as compensation for them buying it at the different price by logging who bought what before what date. If I’m able to compensate for a change in prices to purchasables so should Rec Room.
