Hey creators,
As we’ve shared in past updates, we’re continuing to evolve Room Rewards to better reflect its goals: boosting great rooms that players love coming back to.
We’ve made a few changes over the past couple of months, and we’ve already seen some encouraging signs.
- One room that previously made very little saw its commerce rewards soar to over 500,000 tokens after updating their room to add monetization to adapt to the new requirements.
- Others refreshed their rooms and saw real increases in engagement from the updates made.
There’s always time to take another look at your rooms and give them a refresh to ensure you’re getting the most out of rewards.
So What’s Changing for June
These changes will kick in on June 1st. May payouts are not affected by these changes.
1. Junior visits will no longer count towards Room Reward eligibility
Starting next month, visits from junior accounts will be excluded from Room Reward calculations. Why are we making this change? We’ve continued to dig into the data on rooms that are getting rewarded. We found a small correlation between rooms that are lower effort and primarily get visits from junior players. We want to be really clear - not all rooms that appeal to juniors are low effort. But when we filter out junior visits for room rewards, we found that we were also filtering out the types of rooms that should not be getting rewarded.
Our data shows that the majority of creators will not see much impact from this change.
To help you track this, we’re updating Creator Hub dashboards in mid-June so you can filter junior visits to see exactly how you’re performing. We’ll share more when it goes live.
2. Rooms must have been recently updated to qualify for Room Rewards
In June, rooms will need to be published or updated in the past 90 days to be eligible for room rewards. Rooms that don’t do this will not qualify.
This doesn’t mean rooms need constant updates—but if a room hasn’t been touched in months, we’re treating it as dormant and therefore ineligible. Why? Room rewards are intended to support our creators as they build and add to our ecosystem of new and interesting worlds and experiences for players to enjoy. They are not a lifelong subsidy!
This isn’t the final solution on new and/or updated rooms — and it doesn’t need to be. Think of it as a first step: we’re starting to change the incentives around rooms to better align with what players want to see — updated rooms and fresh new content — while supporting our active creator cohort.
In the future, we plan to explore more time-based rules so that Room Rewards can help new and growing rooms get off the ground, rather than sustaining older ones indefinitely.
We appreciate everyone who’s taken the time to update, experiment, and keep building great stuff. Room Rewards is still evolving, and your feedback and creativity continue to shape it.
