Rec Room Plus Roomie Limits & New Plans Starting Today

We’ve got an important update to share about Roomie.

Since RR+ subscribers got early access on Monday, you’ve already racked up over 40,000 hours of interaction. Go Roomie!

As usage explodes, so do the demands on the internal systems that keep Roomie running. Some of you have hit usage limits and we want to fix that.

So starting today, we’re introducing :high_voltage:Roomie Energy, a new way to manage Roomie usage, along with two new options for getting more Energy if you need it.

:white_check_mark: What’s changing:

  • Rec Room Plus members now receive 8,000 Roomie Energy per month.

  • To go beyond that, you can choose from two new options:

    • :beverage_box: Roomie Energy Pack: a $5 one-time purchase for 5,000 Roomie Energy. You must be an RR+ or Roomie Max subscriber to purchase the Roomie Energy Pack.

    • :repeat_button: Roomie Max: a $20 subscription for 20,000 Roomie Energy delivered monthly, and access to Roomie even if you aren’t a Rec Room Plus member!

:battery: What is Roomie Energy?

Roomie Energy works like mobile data: small interactions use a little, big ones use more. The more you chat with Roomie, the more energy you’ll use.

Right now, you can’t yet see your remaining Energy in-app, but we’re working on adding a visible Energy meter soon. We know that’s a bit frustrating, especially if you’re deciding whether to buy more Energy or not - but we wanted to at least make that option available to players that want to interact more with Roomie.

:warning: What’s Next for Roomie

Our goal is to make Roomie fun and sustainable. We’re getting a great signal that Roomie is fun.

Roomie also has a cost to run. So making Roomie sustainable means we need to be able to cover the real costs of running it, especially as usage grows fast.

We’ve loved seeing all the hype around Roomie - and we have a lot more we’re excited to include in future updates. More customization, text chat support, and new tweaks to animations and movement are all coming very soon. Keep sharing your feedback, ideas, and Roomie photos & videos in the #roomie channel on Discord - the team loves to see it!

Roomie FAQs:

What is Roomie?

Roomie is an AI-enabled robot companion for your Rec Room adventures. To see what Roomie can do, check out our intro video here.

How do I get Roomie?

There are two ways:

  • Rec Room Plus members automatically receive access to Roomie and 8,000 Roomie energy per month as part of their membership.

  • All players (including non RR+ Subscribers) can subscribe to Roomie Max, which grants access to Roomie and 20,000 Roomie energy per month.

Wait - what is Roomie energy?

Roomie energy is what powers your interactions with Roomie. Every interaction uses a little energy, and more complex conversations might use more. Once you’re out of energy - your Roomie will power down until it gets more energy.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Rec Room Plus members get 8,000 Roomie energy monthly.

  • If you run out, you can:

    • Subscribe to Roomie Max (20,000 energy per month)

    • Make a one-time purchase of 5,000 Roomie energy

These energy purchases do not expire and are stackable, so you can purchase as much energy as you need to interact with Roomie however you like.

What can I do with 8,000 Roomie energy?

It’s difficult to give an exact answer, since different types of interactions with Roomie use different amounts of energy. Think of it kind of like your phone battery: streaming HD video drains your battery faster than sending a text message.

That said, here’s a very general ballpark to start with:

  • If you’re having a fast-paced, rich back-and-forth with Roomie, 8,000 energy might last about 3.5 hours.

  • If you’re interacting more casually or intermittently while doing other things in Rec Room, it could last closer to 10 hours.

Where can I see my Roomie energy level?

Currently, you can’t see your balance in the app. We know that’s not ideal, and we’re working hard to get this feature added as soon as possible. In the meantime, you’ll be able to tell when you run out of energy when you’re unable to deploy Roomie from your backpack.

Why is Roomie only available via paid subscriptions?

Every interaction with Roomie has a real-world cost. Keeping Roomie sustainable means we need to be able to cover the costs of running it, especially as usage grows quickly. You can read more about our approach to pricing in a note from our CEO here.

I have Rec Room Plus, but I can’t talk to my Roomie. What’s going on?

If you’ve run out of Roomie energy, you won’t be able to deploy Roomie from your backpack. Soon there will be some messaging there to this effect as well.

However, there is a known bug affecting a small number of players who haven’t used their Energy and can deploy Roomie, but are unable to interact with it. The team is aware of this and actively working on a fix. If you are experiencing this bug - please submit an in-game bug report, and we’ll post an update as soon as we have one.

What if I see someone using Roomie inappropriately?

Just like everything else in Rec Room, interactions with Roomie must follow the Code of Conduct. We have automated safety systems in place, but if you see someone using Roomie in a way that’s racist, sexist, discriminatory, or otherwise against community standards - use the in-game reporting system. Our moderation team will review and take action as appropriate.

Our CEO Nick provided a little more context for this update in another thread, linked here!

I think I can speak for many when I say this was expected. OpenAI platforms models often run into the same recurring issues, and MakerAI is no exception. The tool feels underwhelming, with limited prompt flexibility and results that don’t meet the needs of more serious users. I don’t want roomie to fall into the same fate.

I still need extensive justification for $20 a month. Yes, I get to talk to Roomie more, but that just means you’re making me pay to talk to Roomie more, and I’m also paying for other people. On top of that, I don’t even get a discount for having Rec Room Plus. So that’s $27 a month total. But because of 30% platform fees, you’re technically only getting around $19.68 a month from one person with both subscriptions. Hello!?

I don’t know how many people have a Rec Room Plus subscription, but I’ll assume it’s 5,000. If every Rec Room Plus user also had the Roomie max subscription, that would mean you’d be making $98,400 a month!? That’s how much money you want to take from your user base?

Yes, I know it costs a lot to run a game, and I know you’re trying to pull away from investors, but you need to get more people on the platform before you ask for more money. Find a way to bring in new players or get old ones to return. AI is not the answer, especially when it costs $20.

Why pay 20$ for rec room themed ai when you can use chatgpt yourself for free? I just don’t understand who will be paying 20$ a month for this.

Woah woah woah hold on.. i think you guys need to slow down with this.. 40000 hours within the first month is everyone trying it out. You can basically expect this number to drop fast as more and more players stop trying out roomie.
I can guarantee that after a while, this number will rarely be reached again and now the people who ACTUALLY want to use it will have to deal with the extra $20 paywall.

I thought the whole point of this was to make RR+ more valueable as well, not the opposite.
The least you could do is put a discount for RR+ if Roomie is going to be a seperate payment now

why would you need to talk to other players on the game about hanging out with other players when you can spend 20 buckaroos a month to talk to a flying ai chat bot
