A Roomie Update from Nick

It’s been a busy week for the Roomie team, and today we rolled out some updates to Roomie usage limits & new paid tiers. Our CEO Nick wanted to share a little more context for the update, and where things stand after Roomie’s first few days. I’ve included his message here below:

Hey Everyone,

we’re really glad you’re enjoying Roomie. The usage has been truly wild. People have been averaging almost 50 minutes a day chatting with Roomie. That’s way more than we expected - which is exciting! But… it’s also expensive. Running Roomie takes a lot of computing power.

Right now, RR+ pricing mostly covers the cost for most users. But some of you are really putting in the time, using Roomie 5-10x more than the average player. That’s awesome… but the compute costs for that level of engagement are way more than the $5.60 we get from RR+ ($7.99 after platform fees).

So we’re introducing a few higher-priced Roomie tiers to help cover the cost. If you want to talk to him for 4–5 hours, day after day, no problem. We’ll make that possible. We just need to make sure the compute cost of those conversations is covered.

At this point, we’re mostly focused on learning and growing engagement, so these new tiers are introduced at breakeven. You’re paying roughly what we’re paying to run it. Over time, as inference gets cheaper, we’re optimistic we can both lower prices and find some margin for ourselves. But right now, this is just about making sure we don’t lose money on every person that chats with Roomie.

Thanks for chatting with Roomie. Thanks for understanding. Roomie is about to get some fun new upgrades over the coming weeks, so please check them out and let us know what you think.

i feel like 90% of roomie users use it to say slurs

I still need extensive justification for $20 a month. Yes, I get to talk to Roomie more, but that just means you’re making me pay to talk to Roomie more, and I’m also paying for other people. On top of that, I don’t even get a discount for having Rec Room Plus. So that’s $27 a month total. But because of 30% platform fees, you’re technically only getting around $19.68 a month from one person with both subscriptions. Hello!?

I don’t know how many people have a Rec Room Plus subscription, but I’ll assume it’s 5,000. If every Rec Room Plus user also had the Roomie max subscription, that would mean you’d be making $98,400 a month!? That’s how much money you want to take from your user base?

Yes, I know it costs a lot to run a game, and I know you’re trying to pull away from investors, but you need to get more people on the platform before you ask for more money. Find a way to bring in new players or get old ones to return. AI is not the answer, especially when it costs $20.

if it is so expensive, why not use a cheaper ai model that is just as good?
