Hello, I’m not sure if this is a stupid Idea but, Wouldn’t it be cool If you could use Joy-cons as VR Controllers? I don’t see this happening but Just bringing my Ideas out.
I don’t own a Nintendo Switch, but that sounds like a good idea.
It sounds like a good idea, but it isn’t possible
In order for something to be a VR controller, it needs trackers. Standalone headsets like the Quest series use Inside-Out tracking, where there are cameras in the headsets, possibly the controllers on some standalone headsets, which track the environment that way. Other headsets like the Valve Index use Lighthouse Tracking, where base stations in static positions accurately track your position
The switch controllers have neither, no cameras and no way to connect to lighthouse tracking, not without manual modification
The reason games on the switch can do stuff like motion controls (eg. Switch Sports, Mario Party, Mario Kart), is because of motion tracking. There are gyrometers and accelerometers in the controller that allow them to (inaccurately) track their motion. It works, but will become more inaccurate over time, requiring you to recalibrate them (Like in Switch Golf, where it asks you to get into a starting position, then press a button to “Reset” its in-game position/rotation)
The closest you could probably get switch controllers to be like are similar to SlimeVR’s body trackers, which are kinetic trackers that use gyrometers/accelerometers to track movement, but this is if you or someone made a program that could allow you to even do this, and I doubt they would be as accurate as the actual kinetic trackers, as they are not designed to be trackers
Its possible if you have the drivers for it, but i don’t think it will do good on positional tracking
Would be a good idea if the Joy-Cons had the sensors for it.
The Joy-Cons have an infrared sensor on the right controller and one gyroscope for each controller.
Sadly, there is no spatial tracking that Nintendo put in the Joy-Cons to save money. There is also next to no use case for that feature.
Would be cool though.
Thank you, Unfortunately, I believe this post Is a scrapped Idea, But I appreciate the comment.
