Description

Rooms 2 is currently not working great in terms of supporting animations. Here’s why:

  1. While I thought the hierarchy would allow for some more robust armatures, the Rooms 2 animator controller can only animate the head or parent objects. So, if you child fingers to a hand, those fingers become un-animatable, because they get merged with the hand container.

In rooms 1, the clamp gizmos allow you to create child/parent pairings between objects which work like how you would expect them to. Child objects follow the parent automatically, but each can be keyframed, which means you can have some basic armature support by basically using clamps as bones. Since clamps don’t exist in r2, and since pistons also have completely different parenting behavior in R2, we are taking some steps back here.

  1. In rooms 2, it looks like any selection types besides “precise” do not work when editing within an animation controller. Selection feels generally all over the place, many instances of objects I selected not showing up highlighted, meaning selections overall feel very inaccurate and buggy…

3.Most importantly, Rooms 2 seems to only copy/paste the keyframes of all objects in an animation gizmo. This means you cannot selectively copy the keyframes of just an arm, for example, the entire body and everything else you have attached to the animation gizmo is coming with it. This is a complete loss of functionality that exists in Rooms 1. This makes animating in R2 way more time intensive as well.

Overall, rooms 2 has brought 0 upgrades to the way animations work in RR. As someone who primarily only edits to make animations on the platform, it’s hard for me to get excited for R2 when there are 0 improvements and loss in functionality.

The animation gizmo is really robust compared to competing platforms animation tools, and I really want to continue to animate cool things in r2, its just way harder.

as per the latest playtest, #2 and #3 seem to be fixed! Still though, even though hierarchy exists, no armatures make animating in rooms 2 objectively worse than rooms 1. if #1 can get fixed, then rooms 2 will have parity.
