Why Rec Room Should Remove All Avatars
Rec Room, like many social platforms, uses avatars to represent users—but these avatars often cause more harm than good. The customization system, while intended to be inclusive, can reinforce racial and cultural stereotypes. Limited options for certain features like skin tone, hair texture, or facial traits can reduce complex identities into simplified, sometimes offensive representations. This opens the door to mockery, cultural insensitivity, and even digital blackface.
Worse, players sometimes misuse avatar features to impersonate or stereotype racial and ethnic groups, turning Rec Room into a space where racism can hide behind “just a joke.” Removing avatars altogether would eliminate this issue and help shift the platform’s focus toward creativity, collaboration, and voice-based communication instead of appearance. In doing so, Rec Room would become a safer, more respectful environment for everyone.
