The Saved Outfits UI Needs Some Love In Prep For Avatar Studio & Increased Customization

Hey all.

I’ve been seeing the progress and plans surrounding customization, 1st party items, how Avatar Studio will fit in, and the general plan for customization moving forward, and it all sounds really great.

However, a crucial part of being able to customize ourselves is not just the process in which we would create and sell (or buy) these items, but also how we save, store, categorize them, etc.

This of course is referring to the saved outfits UI page, which has not seen any love recently, and has actually regressed in features many times.

From 2017 to 2022, you could save an outfit and attach a photo of the outfit in your watch. It started with 6 slots, and went up in size up to 18 free slots, and more with RR+ (I think it’s at 200?).

in 2022, this was changed to show a generic, hard to see pose of yourself on a blue background upon saving an outfit. No more being able to take a photo, which was a huge bummer. (Image is recent but shows my point).

In late 2023, we briefly had a proper, updated outfits UI page with search, ability to name outfits, and we got the ability to set a photo again.

Fast forward to today, I guess whatever goals that 2D outfits page had in mind were not met, because we’ve regressed back to the old outfits page with only save/load buttons, and no way to set a photo or search for outfits.

In summary
Please give some attention to the outfits UI.

Whether that’s:

  • introducing the ability to at least take photos on the current, bubble UI as a stopgap
  • reintroducing the 2D outfits UI page again and fixing whatever benchmarks it didn’t meet internally
  • if the issue is that taking out a camera to take a photo takes too long from a friction standpoint, consider adding more options and poses to quickly save an outfit. Being able to pick from different background colors, blurred preset backgrounds, poses, and camera angles quickly would be amazing. Example linked below of how Meta’s newest avatar refresh can be “saved” with different poses. Notice how the saved pose is close up and not super far away.

I just don’t currently enjoy customizing avatars due to the various regressions of this menu. Not sure if others feel the same, but wanted to make a post and raise some awareness.

I think with Avatar Studio coming up, just as important as all of those systems are, they fall apart without a good way to save and categorize outfits, which is where my bread and butter is, as someone who would be buying items and putting outfits together.

Thanks in advance for reading!
