Keeping Custom Clothing Clean

We’re back with more moderation updates.

This time, we’re talking about custom clothing. You might remember our Tee-rific Moderation Update (yes, we’re still proud of that pun) from last November. In that update, we explained how our automated system checks custom clothing designs when they’re published or reported. If an item fails the check, it’s closed.

This system has caught a lot of bad content. Still, we regularly hear from players that the system could be better because they’re seeing things that shouldn’t be in Rec Room. We agree, so we’re rolling out a change on when and how items go through a moderation check.

Every Fit Gets a Check

Let’s talk about the different types of settings available for clothing items.

Our system used to focus on custom clothing that creators made for other players to buy. This started as custom shirts and recently expanded to other items. Items in the store are seen by a lot of players–in the store and when thousands of players buy an item and wear it in Rec Room.

But, not everyone is here to create and sell. Lots of players make custom clothing just to wear themselves. These items don’t appear in the store or on other players, but they can still be worn in public spaces and seen by other players. And unfortunately, some players have made clothing that breaks the Creator Code of Conduct.

Every custom clothing item is now being scanned by our moderation system. This includes items published for sale and items made just for you to wear. If an item is flagged, it’ll be closed to prevent it from showing up in-game.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll also do a backwards check on items previously created, starting with the most recent so we can remove violating items and you’re less and less likely to come across them.

Appeals Made Easy

No moderation system is perfect. But don’t worry, if your item is flagged and you think it’s an error, you can appeal directly in-game.

Our team of moderators will review it and, if it’s all good, reopen your item. All system actions are fully reversible, and your appeals will help us fine-tune the new system over time.

This change is all about making Rec Room a safer place to create and should help us catch more bad items before you see them. We’ll try to share updates with you all on how the system is working in time.

As always, keep creating cool stuff!

Question: With moderation getting better and better, will there ever be a point where you’d be able to open the flood gates to non-RR+ users, even if its just for personal wear? The argument for moderation seems to no longer really apply. Also, with more advanced avatar items (with Avatar Studio) taking reign, letting a wide audience make simpler clothing in-game would be like how you could make/monetize rooms (as in, purchasable with token items will be locked to RR+, and general creation free for everyone)

Plus, you could upsell RR+ with this tactic, letting users prototype and make shirts before buying RR+ and selling them!
